Summer Fun!

High temperatures, sweat, sunburns, lots of showmanship, and tons of people, is the only way to describe the past couple of weeks! We wrapped up our summer camps last Friday and have spent this whole week playing catch up. I must say that the camps were well worth it!
All of us here at Tusa Show Cattle had a great time working with all of campers, and we hope everyone else did also.

We had two day camps as well as our first overnight camp. The overnight campers had a great time and really gained a lot from it. A big thanks to all of you who attended the camps.
During the camp we were fortunate to have some amazing speakers come out and talk to all of the kids. A huge thanks goes out to: Kyle McManus, Rachel Williams Cutrer, Jake Franke, Wes Mason, Dusty Abney, Chris Boleman, Tobin Redwine, David Groschke and Radale Tiner.
We could not have done it without ya'll!

We also want to thank all of the wonderful sponsors who donated to the 2010 Tusa Show Cattle Camps. They are these reason we are able to put on camps like this for today's youth.
Without them, our camps would not be possible.

Stolle Family Suffers Great Loss

The call we got last Tuesday was such a shock that none of us could believe it. I had just spoke to Lisa Stolle 20 minutes prior, checking in with her on the county calf that they had just brought to us Sunday to have a last look at before the county show (one week away). Next thing I knew, Jacob was calling me saying that he had just spoke to Lisa and that their cattle barn was on fire! I was in disbelief thinking "how could this be?" Unfortunately, this horrific news was, in fact, true. Their barn, their show cattle equipment and two show steers were a complete loss.

The Stolle Family has been a client of ours for two years. We have quickly built a strong friendship and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Lisa and her husband Mike, along with their daughter, Shelby. They had experienced a few setbacks this year with their county calf but kept pushing along and when Jacob and Jared saw the calf on Sunday, they were really pumped up to see how much he had changed and really come along for the better. In fact, both had told me that this year's calf was even better than Shelby's calf last year (which she won Grand Champion Steer with at her county show). They are very kind and generous people and some of the nicest, most sincere families you will ever meet. Now, to see this type of thing happen to them and see the heartbreak that Shelby is experience is something that I hope none of our clients ever have to go through.

As many of you can relate, these calves were part of their family. Countless hours spent with them and watching them change and grow throughout the year helps build the bond that is so strong. Most people outside of the livestock arena cannot understand why we get so attached. It's hard not to! Shelby's livestock projects were what she did... these were priority over any type of athletic activities. This was what motivated her and what she was passionate about.

In the fire, the family lost their county calf that they had been feeding since the fall, as well as their red angus calf that they had just bought for the spring 2011 major shows. Their barn and all of their cattle equipment was a complete loss. The family has agreed to continue their showing endeavors and all of us at Tusa Show Cattle will do whatever it takes to help the Stolle family regroup and get Shelby ready to show in the future. Our thoughts and prayers and with them during this very difficult time.

In Memory of Clint Humphreys (1941-2010)

A client and a close friend, Clint Humphreys, passed away this past Thursday night. This was a shock to all of us and we were very saddened to hear of his passing.

Clint was the father of Randy Humphreys and the grandfather of Miranda, Miriah, and Nate Humphreys. Pictured here is Miranda with her steer that was selected as the Reserve Champion Division Heavy Weight Exotic Steer at the 2009 Fort Worth Stock Show.
Clint loved the show steer projects that his grandchildren were involved in. Clint will be dearly missed by all of us at Tusa Show Cattle and all those who knew him.

A Letter to PawPaw from Jacob:
I know now you are in a greater place than we all know. I am sure you are either coaching some players at a ball game or teaching someone how to be better at something than what they are at the present time. Maybe you are just taking a moment to look down and admire your grandkids playing sports or showing cattle.

It was an extreme pleasure in my life to have had the opportunity to have known you and to have sold you and your family cattle. I will miss those early morning breakfasts that you, Nancy and I had eating her wonderful pancakes or the phone calls about what the cattle are doing and if that Angus is ever going to hair back up. I think the most impressive thing to me that I will always remember is your deep down family values and your integrity. You were very motivated to be involved with all of your family and all of their activities. I will never forget that when you told someone that you were going to do something that you did it with no excuses and that a handshake was worth more than any contract that could be created. That principle was most defined from your era and has lost touch in the era that we now know today.

On a lighter note, there will never be a better team of two people AKA the East Texas Hair Connection as PawPaw and Fred. But PawPaw, Fred and us will have to do the best we can but it will never be as good as with you.

I will never forget one of our last conversations, and what you said to me will remain with me for the rest of my life. Thanks for all the memories PawPaw. You will be greatly missed.

Your Friend, Jacob

Let it Snow!

It snowed all day yesterday and although it was slowly melting off, there was still snow left on the ground today along with a little bit of ice. Big deal for us Central Texas folks... so of course we decided that we needed to make Georgia's first snowman. By the time I could get Georgia bundled up and recruited some help (mostly Frank!), the snow was beginning to melt quickly. It wouldn't be right without a little touch of Tusa Show Cattle as you can see on the snowman's head...

Awesome San Antonio 2010!

We were so excited when Kacy Bland's steer was slapped in the AT&T Center on Friday night as the "RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION STEER" at the 2010 San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo. What an amazing honor and finally this big win in San Antonio. Kacy and her family did an awesome job all year. This calf was sold in our 2009 High Stakes Sale and was lot 236 in the sale last spring which was our high seller for the sale. Her steer sold this Saturday in the Premium Auction for $45,000! Congratulations to Kacy and her family on working hard all year - it definitely was worth it!
We also want to congratulate the Lastovica Family from Salado. Stephanie's steer was honored with the Champion Limousin Steer honors at San Antonio this past week.
Congratulations to many of our other clients on placing well in their classes and making the sale. Keep it up everyone - good luck to those of you going to San Angelo this week and we look forward to seeing you in Houston in a few weeks!

County Show Time

Wow it has been a busy past week as we have been hustling around to many of the county shows that our clients have had! We have had a good run which includes...Reserve Exotic at Mills County, Grand & Reserve Steers at Dimmitt County, Reserve Steer at Kendall County, Grand Steer at Lubbock County, Reserve Steer at Haskell County, Reserve Steer at Yoakum County and probably more that we failed to mention!

Here's a neat article about the Reserve Steer at Yoakum County shown by Miss Kaci Herman. Kaci is just the sweetest little girl. She attended one of our day camps last summer and was just a pleasure to have. She wasn't quite sure about her steer, "Mike", and kept telling us that he was a little mean. We informed her to make sure she let Mike know that she was the boss, not him and this little girl got ahold of Mike and they were just quite the pair! Needless to say, the calf ended up being gentle as a puppy dog and it sounds like it was a great experience for her first year. She was very excited receive this big win at her county show and here's the link for a neat article about her...
http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/news/2010/jan/18/jo_yoakum_stockshow_101710_81848/?news

Thanks to all of these families for their business and congratulations on your success this past week and weekend! Best of luck to many more families on their upcoming county shows over the next week - you guys are all keeping us quite busy!!

Emily Jackson featured in the WACOAN

On our of clients was recently featured in the WACOAN magazine. Emily Jackson is recognized as one of the Star Students for 2010 in this month's issue. Emily and her family have purchased show steers from us for years and last year she had the Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the McLennan County Show with her black and white steer she purchased from Tusa Show Cattle! Emily excels both in and out of the classroom and is an outstanding livestock judge.

We have enjoyed watching Emily over the years and we are very proud of all of her accomplishments. Here's the link to the WACOAN and if you are in the Waco area be sure to pick up a copy to read about Emily on page 68.

It's Lice Time!

It's that time of the year again, when those lovely little critters we all love so much begin to invade our show cattle. To rid yourself of a lot of stress we recommend using Prolate/Lintox-HD. Be sure to read the directions and spray calf all over with a small one gallon pump-up sprayer. It is very important to mix correctly with water or it can burn your steer or heifer. A good rule of thumb is to spray your calf at night before you turn he or she out for feeding so the spray can set in good. Furthermore, we recommend preventing this problem early to avoid any problems down the road.

Happy 2010 from Tusa Show Cattle!

Hope this post finds each of you having a great start to 2010 and staying warm with this super chilly weather we are seeing! Things are starting to pick up around here as there are several county shows coming up this month... not to mention the Fort Worth Heifer & Steer shows in just a few weeks.

Please contact us if you have a heifer or steer for Fort Worth as we need to schedule your appointment to clip and add you to the list for fitting!

We also want to introduce Tiffany Sizemore as an addition to our team at Tusa Show Cattle. Tiffany is a Junior Animal Science major at Texas A&M University. She is no new face to the show world as many of you know her from her many major show wins in Texas. This includes Reserve Grand Steer at Houston in 2000 and countless Breed Champion and Reserve Breed Champion wins at Texas Majors. She will be helping us out in the office and assisting with making appointments and updating feed schedules, among many other responsibilities. Welcome Tiffany - we are so glad to have you on board!!
